Ex-Medtronic CEO Hawkins to chair new med-tech research center | Personnel Moves
Former Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) CEO Bill Hawkins will serve as the first chairman of a new private-public partnership aimed at improving development and testing of medical devices.
The partnership includes the Minnesota med-tech community, the FDA’s Center for Devices & Radiological Health and the University of Minnesota to establish a regulatory science center in the North Star State.

NuVasive (NSDQ:NUVA) swung to red for the 4th quarter and full-year 2011, largely on the back of an $18.2 million writedown of intangible assets.
The San Diego-based spinal implant maker posted a loss of $10.0 million, or 24 cents per share, on sales of $150.2 million for the 3 months ended Dec. 31, 2012. That’s a top-line gain of 16.2% compared with Q4 2010, when NuVasive posted profits of $61.9 million, or $1.39 EPS.

Eric Bouvier took over the corner office at BG Medicine (NSDQ:BGMD) yesterday as president & CEO of the Waltham, Mass.-based diagnostics developer.
Prior to joining BG, Bouvier, 51, headed the Immunoassay business at global diagnostics company BioMérieux. He also held the role of president & CEO of BioMérieux’s U.S. subsidiary bioMerieux Inc.
SBi secures $43M loan | Funding Roundup
Orthopedic technology company Small Bone Innovations Inc. landed a $43 million loan to further sales of its flagship ankle replacement device.
The New York-based company plans to use the credit facility as working capital to drive U.S. growth of its Star total ankle replacement, a non-cemented implant designed to replace arthritic ankle joints in patients with osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
The system is currently the only mobile-bearing total ankle replacement approved for the U.S. market.
MedicaMetrix lands “fast-lane” grant | Funding Roundup
Urology diagnostics maker MedicaMetrix Inc. landed a $66,950 grant under the Medical Device Development Center’s "fast-lane" program to continue the development of its ProstaGlove for low cost detection of prostate cancer.
The grant was supported by the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative’s John Adams Innovation Institute.
Kensey Nash wins $1.9M government grant | Funding Roundup
Kensey Nash Corp. (NSDQ:KNSY) landed a small business innovation research grant from the National Institutes of Health to investigate the use of surgical mesh for tendon repair procedures.
The two-year, $1.9 million grant will allow the Exton, Pa.-based regenerative medicine developer to investigate the ability of its bioadhesive mesh to improve standard sutured tendon repair.

Hansen Medical Inc. (NSDQ:HNSN) initiated a clinical trial of its Sensei X robotic technology for the control of catheter movement in patients with ventricular tachycardia.
Hansen’s system features a flexible catheter designed to simplify and enhance catheter navigation for doctors treating patients with VT.
