Hologic
(Nasdaq: HOLX)
announced today that it completed its $350 million acquisition of Gynesonics.
Marlborough, Massachusetts–based Hologic announced an agreement to buy Gynesonics in October. Gynesonics develops minimally invasive medical device solutions for women’s health, including the Sonata system.
Gynesonics designed Sonata for diagnostic intrauterine imaging and transcervical treatment of certain symptomatic uterine fibroids. That includes those associated with heavy menstrual bleeding. The technology combines real-time intrauterine ultrasound guidance with targeted radiofrequency ablation. It offers a completely incisionless procedure.
Gynesonics President and CEO Skip Baldino said in a news release that Hologic’s “commitment to women’s health and their leadership in innovation makes them a perfect fit for our organization.”
“We are excited to complete the acquisition of Gynesonics and to increase access to their Sonata system, which complements and expands our range of minimally invasive solutions for heavy periods and fibroids,” said Brandon Schnittker, President of Surgical Solutions at Hologic. “As global champions for women’s health, we are dedicated to empowering surgeons with diverse, cutting-edge treatment options as we strive to transform women’s lives for the better.”
The acquisition of Gynesonics marks the second large purchase made by Hologic in the last six months. The company completed the $310 million acquisition of Endomagnetics in July. Endomagnetics develops wireless breast surgery localization and lymphatic tracing solutions.
