Paragonix Technologies closes $1M financing round

Paragonix Technologies said it closed $1.1 million in financing via a convertible debt sale round.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based medical device company has brought in $3.4 million through equity, debt financing, and NIH grants, according to a press release.

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — U.K. researchers performed a world 1st this month, keeping a donor liver "alive" and functioning inside novel medical device.

The device may soon replace the "on ice" method of preserving liver tissue as it moves from the donor to the recipient, at least according to the engineers and clinicians who were part of the landmark procedure.

TransMedics notches 1st U.S. “breathing lung” transplant

Organ-transport system maker TransMedics notched a U.S. 1st in accommodating a "breathing lung" transplant at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical center.

Using the same technology that made possible the "heart in a box" experiment, in which a donor heart was delivered warm and beating to a recipient rather than frozen in an ice cooler, doctors implanted a 57-year-old man with a functioning and "breathing" lung delivered in TransMedics’ Organ Care System.

TransMedics touts $36M raised

Andover, Mass.-based organ-transport system maker TransMedics raised $36 million in equity from 15 investors, the company reported.

The funding came after the company raised $6 million of a planned $22.5 million in an equity round across 9 investors last year and completed the 5th fund raise of $35.4 million with a large group of VC firms in 2010.

Wal-Mart offers no-cost heart, spine, transplant surgeries to employees

Retail goliath Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) is changing the shape of employer insurance programs by offering its workers no-cost heart and spine surgeries through a new "Centers of Excellence" initiative.

Wal-Mart selected 6 nationwide centers at which employees enrolled in the company’s medical program can seek consultations and care without paying anything out of pocket, beginning in January.

Heart pump beats current standard of care for kids awaiting transplant

Berlin Heart's Excor pediatric heart pump

Children with heart failure survived longer while awaiting a heart transplant when they received therapy with Berlin Heart’s Excor pediatric ventricular assist device than when treated with the current standard of care, according to a new study.

The Excor PAD device was not without risks, but survival rates for children on the device were "significantly higher" than those in the control group, according to the study’s authors.

Senate to vote today on FDA user fee bill | MassDevice.com On Call

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — The U.S. Senate will today move to vote on the FDA user fee bill, having come to terms on a bevy of amendments added to the measure.

The Senate will consider 17 amendments to the original bill, which was drafted in negotiations between the FDA and industry stakeholders and then passed to the White House, where it received a stamp of approval before heading to Congress.
