Smith+Nephew to highlight handheld surgical robotics tech at AAOS

Smith+Nephew (NYSE: SNN) today announced plans to showcase its latest innovations in handheld robotics and digital orthopedic solutions.

The London-based orthopedic giant plans to highlight its technologies during the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in New Orleans this week.

Among Smith+Nephew’s advancements is the Cori surgical system and its Coriograph pre-op planning and modeling services. Cori delivers a digital surgery ecosystem from pre-operative planning to connected post-operative data management. The planning and modeling offerings optimize handheld robotic knee and shoulder arthroplasty, along with computer-guided hip surgery.

Smith+Nephew said it plans to demonstrate how 3D modeling of patient motion can further enhance its Cori offerings. Plus, it plans to showcase the Cori Shoulder system with the Aetos implant. The company also reported the first-ever Cori shoulder arthroplasty cases completed last week at Duke Health.

Advances in handheld robotics at Smith+Nephew come as Stryker also rolls out its own handheld Mako offering.

More about the Smith+Nephew offerings at AAOS

Also at AAOS, Smith+Nephew plans to highlight its other implant systems alongside Aetos, including the Legion total knee system and Catalystem primary hip system.

In trauma advances, the company is showcasing the Evos large and periprosthetic plating system. The company plans to expand that portfolio with the launch of the Evos pelvic system later this year. Smith+Nephew also touts its Trigen Max nailing system for optimizing fragment fixation and minimizing soft tissue irritation.

The company also noted its recent distribution agreements with Si-Bone for pelvic fixation technology and RMR Ortho for its nitinol fixation system.

Finally, Smith+Nephew plans to showcase its expanded enterprise ambulatory surgery center (ASC) offering. The end-to-end solution supports both de novo ASC development and the modernization of existing facilities. Smith+Nephew wants to enable customers to finance, design, build, equip and optimize centers through a coordinated, streamlined pathway. The company inked partnerships with Brasfield & Gorrie, Ghafari Associates, Unity Health Centers and Steris to advance this.

ASCs deliver same-day outpatient care as a potentially more convenient, cost-effective option. Companies in a range of spaces, such as orthopedics, surgical robotics and, most recently, pulsed field ablation (PFA) are currently targeting ASCs for their offerings as they rise in popularity.
