Aetos originally received FDA clearance in June 2023, bolstering the company’s upper extremity portfolio. London-based Smith+Nephew designed Aetos to restore patients’ range of motion and help minimize arthritic shoulder pain. The system features the Aetos Meta Stem designed for maximizing stability preserving bone and maintaining patient anatomy.
Smith+Nephew announced the commercial rollout at AAOS, taking place this week in San Francisco.
Full commercial availability for Aetos comes along with FDA clearance for its use with AtlasPlan 3D planning software and patient-specific instrumentation for total shoulder arthroplasty.
More about the Smith+Nephew Aetos shoulder system
Aetos is indicated for both anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. Smith+Nephew says it enhances the surgical experience by enabling intraoperative flexibility. The system has fewer steps for conversion and fewer instruments for primary anatomic and reverse arthroplasty. Dr. Charles Jobin of Columbia University Irving Medical Center called it a “game-changer” in a news release.
Now, the AtlasPlan 3D software and instrumentation helps to enable pre-operative case planning. Smith+Nephew developed this technology in partnership with Materialize NV. It features a user-friendly online planner for access from any computer or tablet and fast turnaround time from image upload to planning.
The system also has an optional 3D-printed glenoid guide designed with a patented coracoid clip for stability. It provides a reliable and accurate method to execute the surgical plan through conventional techniques.
“I’m thrilled with the stem fixation of the implant that the Aetos shoulder system provides and believe it will be a noticeable, positive improvement for my patients,” said Dr. Matthew Ramsey, shoulder and elbow specialist at Rothman Orthopaedics. “I’m also very pleased with the instrumentation – especially the glenoid reamer being so low profile and easy to use.”
