The device is indicated for sealing vessels up to 7 mm in diameter for colorectal, gynecological, thoracic, urological and vascular procedures. It is designed to be operated with one hand and features a jaw coating to minimize tissue sticking.
“The benefits of the Powerseal open extended jaw are immediately noticeable. The heat spread around the jaws is minimal, which helps keep the energy focused within the tissue held in the jaws during activation,” Karim Alavi, Director of Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at UMass Memorial Medical Center, said in a press release. “The instrument combines an ergonomic design that fits comfortably and naturally in your hand with very good sealing and cutting performance.”
The device, along with the rest of the Powerseal portfolio, is powered by the ESG-410 Surgical Energy Platform, which offers monopolar, standard biopolar, advanced bipolar, ultrasonic and hybrid energy modes. It is also compatible with the ESG-400 platform.
“Olympus is excited to launch the latest addition to its Powerseal portfolio that delivers precision and efficiency during open procedures,” Head of Surgical Business Kanichi Matsumoto said in a press release. “The Powerseal open extended jaw sealer/divider was designed for ergonomic comfort and to minimize hand movement during procedures to allow surgeons to focus on what matters most: Their patient.”
Olympus won FDA 510(k) clearance for the device in April of this year.
Other recent Olympus news includes the launch of a next-generation surgical imaging platform and an endoscopic ultrasound system in collaboration with Canon Medical.
