Carlsmed (Nasdaq:CARL) has brought on a chief product and artificial intelligence officer, marketing the latest in a string of recent changes in the C-suite of the spine surgery company.
Dr. Tony Jarc will take the newly created position as Carlsmed looks to grow its AI-powered, patient-specific implant business. He joins from Intuitive, where he was VP for digital products and machine learning following 15 years at the robotics giant.
“Tony’s addition comes at a pivotal moment as we transform our technology platform to scale and advance our patient-centric innovation for our highly differentiated personalized surgery business,” Carlsmed CEO Mike Cordonnier said in a statement. “As a true thought leader in the clinical deployment of AI-enabled surgical technologies at a large scale, I am thrilled to have Tony join our team and further elevate our market leadership position.”
Last month, the company tapped Richard Heppenstall as chief financial officer and promoted Jeff Bertolini to chief operating officer. Heppenstall previously served as CFO and treasurer of ZimVie, while Bertolini was Carlsmed’s senior VP for operational excellence and VP of advanced manufacturing technologies.

October 1 also marked the day that Medicare reimbursements went into effect for the company’s Aprevo lumbar fusion procedures. For the 2027 fiscal year, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ inpatient final rule created three new diagnosis codes and payment rates that cover the lower-spine surgeries.

In the future, Carlsmed has planned to launch a bi-lateral procedure under the Aprevo line, as well as its Corra cervical procedure. Aprevo’s interbody system is also available for cervical fusion, following its launch last December.
