Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) has plucked a new general counsel from another big medtech outfit as its current top lawyer plans to retire.
Bloomberg first reported the news of the appointment today. A statement shared with MassDevice via email from a Medtronic spokesperson confirmed that the current EVP, General Counsel and Secretary, Ivan Fong, plans to retire. His retirement goes into effect on July 21, the spokesperson said.
To succeed Fong, the spokesperson said Medtronic selected Michelle Quinn, the current general counsel at BD.
Quinn first joined BD in 2019. BD named Quinn as its general counsel in April 2023, following a few months in the role in an interim capacity. Quinn succeeded Samrat (Sam) Khichi in the role. Khichi left BD for a new opportunity.
The new Medtronic general counsel has also served as SVP, deputy general counsel and chief ethics and compliance officer at BD. Before joining BD, Quinn held the position of VP and general counsel of North America for Novartis’ Sandoz division. Prior to that, she served as VP and associate general counsel at Catalent Pharma Solutions.
Fong, meanwhile, succeeded Brad Lerman, assuming the official title of EVP, General Counsel & Secretary for Medtronic in early 2022.
Fong joined Medtronic from 3M, having served as the St. Paul, Minnesota-based company’s chief legal & policy officer & secretary. Previous roles include general counsel for the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and chief legal officer & secretary for Cardinal Health.
