Varipulse Pro features a new pulse sequence that marks the next evolution of the pulsed field ablation (PFA) platform, which treats AFib. The company said it designed the technology to improve procedural efficiency while reinforcing safety and effectiveness.
Johnson & Johnson said the new pulse sequence has a lower temperature profile, plus an ablation that comes in five times faster than the previous sequence, while still achieving equivalent lesions. The medtech giant built the technology on the proven Varipulse platform, which originally received CE mark in 2024.
Varipulse competes in the hot PFA market alongside several big names in medtech. In Europe, those include Volt (Abbott), Farapulse (Boston Scientific), PulseSelect (Medtronic), Globe (Kardium), Centauri (CardioFocus) and PulseMagic (MicroPort EP).
“The introduction of Varipulse Pro in Europe reflects our commitment to advancing our PFA platforms through continuous innovation, enhancing procedural experience while maintaining the consistency and precision physicians expect from the Varipulse Platform,” said Michael Bodner, company group chair, Electrophysiology & Neurovascular, MedTech, Johnson & Johnson. “This launch demonstrates our dedication to continuously evolving PFA technologies based on real-world learnings and our scientific expertise, supporting physicians to deliver high-quality care and improved patient outcomes.”
More about the Johnson & Johnson Varipulse platform
Varipulse Pro introduces the new pulse sequence while maintaining its integration with the Carto 3 mapping system. Carto 3 offers 3D heart mapping for electrophysiology procedures, including PFA. The platform utilizes advanced mapping capabilities, including tissue proximity indicators for precise lesion delivery.
Initial cases for Varipulse Pro took place in the VARIPURE multicenter, prospective, post-market follow-up study. The company plans to continue to generate evidence through this study and additional trials during its commercial launch. Varipulse Pro remains investigational in the U.S.
The company plans to feature Varipulse Pro at the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) annual meeting. It also expects to share VARIPURE findings at the EHRA PFA summit.
“In our early experience, Varipulse Pro has been exceptionally smooth and easy to use,” said Dr. Tom De Potter, head of electrophysiology and associate director of the Heart Center, OLV Hospital, Aalst, Belgium. “The speed is particularly striking and contributes to more efficient procedures without compromising precision. The integration with CARTO mapping and intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) facilitate accurate positioning and consistent lesion delivery, contributing to a very positive procedural experience.”
