Johnson & Johnson launches daily disposable multifocal toric contact lens

June 23, 2025 By Danielle Kirsh

This is the logo of Johnson & Johnson.Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) today announced it launched its Acuvue Oasys Max multifocal lens for astigmatism.

The company said the new lens is intended for one-day use for patients with both astigmatism and presbyopia. Acuvue Oasys Max lens provides clear, stable vision at all distances and in various lighting conditions, as well as all-day comfort. The launch expands the Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day product line and introduces what J&J described as the first complete family of daily disposable contact lenses for people with astigmatism.

“Building on our legacy of firsts, we are thrilled to launch Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for astigmatism,” said Peter Menziuso, group chair of Vision at Johnson & Johnson. “Acuvue is the world’s leading contact lens brand and with these new products, we now have the first and only complete family of daily-disposable contact lenses. Clear sight empowers people to live their best lives, and we believe everyone should have the opportunity to achieve it. That’s why we focus our innovation on areas with the greatest unmet needs for patients. Today, we are working to fulfill that promise, providing millions of patients with a differentiated Acuvue experience.”

The company expects to launch Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day for astigmatism later this summer in the U.S. and Canada, with plans to expand to additional markets globally in 2025 and beyond.

Addressing a gap in vision correction

Astigmatism affects about 50% of the population and occurs when the eye’s curvature causes blurred or distorted vision. Presbyopia, the age-related loss of near vision, typically begins in the early to mid-40s. J&J said patients with both conditions have historically had limited contact lens options and often had to use reading glasses with their lenses or switch to reusable options.

The new multifocal toric lens is built with four proprietary technologies, according to the company:

  • Blink stabilized design intended to reduce blur by helping the lens remain stable during blinking or head movement.
  • Pupil optimized design, which supports near, intermediate and distance vision needs.
  • TearStable technology is designed to help maintain hydration throughout the day.
  • OptiBlue Light Filter that filters 60% of blue-violet light.

In clinical studies, Johnson & Johnson reported that 95% of wearers said they experienced clear vision during daily activities and 87% reported clear vision while driving at night. Additionally, 92% said their eyes remained comfortable throughout the day.
