GE HealthCare adds Caption AI to handheld ultrasound

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) announced today that it launched its Caption AI software for point-of-care assessments on its Vscan Air SL.

Clinicians can now use the handheld ultrasound system with access to real-time, step-by-step guidance from Caption AI. It helps capture diagnostic-quality images and automated ejection fraction estimation to help inform clinical decisions across cardiac settings.

GE HealthCare first unveiled its Vscan Air SL, the latest version of the Vscan system, in August 2023. The company debuted the first Vscan color pocket-sized ultrasound in 2010. Today, more than 50,000 Vscan platform devices are out in the field. The FDA cleared the initial GE HealthCare Vscan Air CL system in late 2020. The company then launched the device in March 2021.

With the acquisition of Caption Health in 2023, GE HealthCare added AI-driven imaging guidance to its arsenal. Caption also supports its Venue point-of-care ultrasound systems with AI-driven Caption Guidance, launched last fall.

More about the GE HealthCare Vscan Air SL with Caption AI

The company said its Vscan Air SL with Caption AI helps lower the threshold for healthcare professionals to capture cardiac images. This means even non-expert ultrasound users can take a quick look at patients’ hearts.

Caption AI provides real-time visual guidance to prompt users on probe movements. It features a quality meter to ensure the best possible images, too. Once a user captures an image, the system’s AutoEF feature automatically calculates a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Users can also effeciently scan with AutoCapture and Save Best Clip Features to get the best quality images.

Vscan Air SL itself provides high levels of depth, resolution and sensitivity in imaging performance through its single crystal transducer technology.

“The integration of Caption AI with the Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound opens an entirely new chapter for cardiac screening. This technology empowers users with guidance and tools for high quality ultrasound scans and supports earlier detection of cardiac disease,” said Roland Rott, president and CEO, Ultrasound, GE HealthCare. “The strategic acquisition of Caption Health in 2023 continues to expand the capabilities of our products and solidifies our leadership in ultrasound and the emerging artificial intelligence landscape.”
