Teleflex (NYSE:TFX), ConMed (NSDQ:CNMD) and Precision Medical top the list of best places to work in medical device sales in the coming year, according to a MedReps.com survey of medical sales representatives.
MedReps surveyed more than 1,200 medical sales professionals to get a better understanding of what employees look for in employers and how satisfied they are with their jobs. A record-breaking 70% voted for their current employer, up from 64% last year. In a switch from previous surveys, the percentage of respondents who said they were actively looking for work fell to just 11%, compared with 24% last year and 29% in 2018.
In recent years, employers have encouraged their sales teams to anonymously participate in the survey, leading to a notable increase in the percentage of respondents voting for their employers. Respondents who did not choose to vote for their current employer were given a list other MedReps nominees, previous winners, as well as companies on the Fortune and Global 500 lists. They also had the option to write in a vote.
The top things respondents said they love about their job include their ability to make an impact (35%), work-life balance (26%) and opportunity for growth (24%), with management and autonomy/flexibility tied at 21%. Topping the worst things about their job were administrative work, followed by stress and pressure and gaining access to customers. Time in the car and bad commission structures rounded out the top five.
Sales reps who voted for Teleflex and ConMed cited “positive corporate culture” among their top reasons for doing so. MedReps asked survey respondents what the term means in terms of leadership, teammates and employee recognition. Their answers included:
- Honest and trustworthy leaders (53%).
- Supportive teammates (62%).
- Work-life balance (83%).
- A focus on team-building and collaboration (60%).
When it came to employee recognition, compensation ranked as most important (80%), but respondents also wanted to know their employer is committed to promoting from within (59%). Mentorship is appreciated (43%), while paid training (16%) and tuition reimbursement (2%) are less important.
Overall, 90% of respondents reported they were satisfied with their jobs, not just those at the winning companies.
