Moon Surgical gets FDA nod for AI-enhancement for surgical robot

Moon Surgical announced today that it received FDA clearance for ScoPilot, a Nvidia-enabled platform for its Maestro surgical robot.

The Paris-based company also announced further integrations with Nvidia technologies, including the Isaac for Healthcare platform.

ScoPilot, enabled by Nvidia Holoscan, is a real-time sensing platform designed to develop and deploy applications based on AI in the OR. It runs locally on Moon Surgical’s Maestro system, making it the first AI application to run intraoperatively on any commercially available surgical robotic platform with Holoscan, according to a news release.

Moon Surgical said ScoPilot enables a stable and ideal view during surgery. It aims to enhance control, safety and efficiency in the OR. The company describes ScoPilot as on-demand and easy to use, allowing a laparoscope attached to Maestro to follow a desired instrument tip seamlessly. The surgeon controls laparoscope positioning without disengaging the instrument from their hands. That helps maintain surgical flow and focus.

The company — one of MassDevice’s 10 surgical robotics companies you need to know in 2024 — designed Maestro to provide an accessible, enhanced version of traditional laparoscopy. Maestro acts as a robotic surgical assistant to augment the precision and control of laparoscopic surgery. The small, adaptable system can integrate into existing clinical workflows. It features capabilities that bolster operating room efficiency and allow for alternative labor models.

“ScoPilot empowers surgeons to control three instruments with just two hands, while offering a stable, constantly optimal, and safe field of view that is crucial during surgery,” said Anne Osdoit, CEO of Moon Surgical. “The control provided by Maestro’s ScoPilot will enhance OR efficiency by making the surgeon more autonomous while improving procedural visualization.”

More work is underway between Moon Surgical and Nvidia

Moon Surgical and Nvidia also announced further collaboration to enhance Maestro through the Nvidia Isaac for Healthcare platform. This collaboration strengthens Moon’s position in using “Physical AI” in the OR. It leverages Maestro to unlock new opportunities to digitize surgery at its core and improve efficiency across the surgical ecosystem.

“We’re excited for the release of NVIDIA Isaac for Healthcare which will help us add even more perceptive and intelligent capabilities to evolve the practice of surgery on our digital and AI native architecture,” Osdoit said. “Instead of training our AI using real OR data, we’ll be able to simulate various OR environments, use them to generate synthetic data via intra and perioperative experiences to ultimately train our AI to understand and interact with the physical world around it.”

Maestro leverages the Nvidia Holoscan platform for real-time sensor processing powered by Nvidia IGX. Integrating Isaac can accelerate safe and efficient design, testing and deployment of intelligent capabilities on Maestro.

“NVIDIA Isaac for Healthcare aims to expand possibilities for companies such as Moon Surgical to bring physical AI into the next generation of surgical robotics,” said David Niewolny, director of business development for MedTech at NVIDIA. “This platform has the potential to accelerate development cycles, reduce cost and speed time to market, while ensuring safe and effective system testing and deployment.”

Nvidia, a leader in AI computing, has worked with a number of medtech companies to incorporate AI into their technologies. Johnson & Johnson MedTech announced last year that it plans to accelerate and scale AI for surgery in partnership with Nvidia. GE HealthCare and Nvidia partnered to bring AI to ultrasound technology in March 2024 as well.

Asensus Surgical linked up with Nvidia in 2023 to deliver novel clinical intelligence to surgeons in surgical robotics. Medtronic also partnered with Nvidia to enable an AI Access platform to boost the GI Genius intelligent endoscopy module’s capabilities. This week, Hyperfine announced a deal with Nvidia to leverage its AI in neuroimaging.
