Wandercraft acquires exoskeleton rival Ekso Bionics

Wandercraft has acquired fellow exoskeleton maker Ekso Bionics, with the goal of forming an international robotic mobility player.

The companies say Ekso’s U.S. commercial presence will bolster Wandercraft’s footprints in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Their respective EksoNR and Atalante X systems are currently deployed at more than 700 rehabilitation centers worldwide, and carry similar FDA clearances and CE marks for assisting patients with stroke and multiple sclerosis, as well as brain or spinal cord injuries.

“We share a vision for how robotics can empower people whose mobility has been unfairly limited by injury or disease,” Wandercraft co-founder and CEO Matthieu Masselin said in a statement.

“By bringing together our products, teams, and clinical relationships on both sides of the Atlantic, we have an exceptional opportunity to expand access to robotic mobility worldwide, reach more patients and rehabilitation professionals, and help more people experience the independence and connection that upright mobility can offer,” Masselin added.

The Paris- and New York-based Wandercraft also recently began rolling out its personal, self-balancing Eve exoskeleton in the U.S., which allows users to walk and stand upright by operating its hand controls, and the company has been working on expanding market access.

Ekso, meanwhile, offers the Indego Personal modular wearable from its HQ in San Rafael, California. Wandercraft said it plans to continue supporting all four platforms, while seeking broader international reimbursement coverage.

“Ekso has spent two decades pioneering robotic technologies, advancing engineering and R&D, and building a robust body of clinical research and evidence that has earned the trust of clinicians and the people who rely on our products,” said Ekso CEO Scott Davis. “Together, we can build on that trailblazing work and expand our ability to develop and deploy technologies that make a meaningful difference for more people.”

Ekso’s corporate parent, ChronoScale, outlined a plan earlier this year to sell the exoskeleton maker and pivot toward becoming a fully cloud-based provider of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
