New Cleveland Clinic chairman aims to standardize care
The new chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s board of directors said his top priority is standardizing patient care so best practices are shared throughout the health system.
“The first thing that we’re doing is an enterprise-wide review of all of [the Clinic’s] quality and patient safety standards and procedures … to identify best practices and standardize them,” said Robert Rich Jr. told the Cleveland interview with The Plain Dealer. “I’m surprised that this hadn’t been done before.”

Feds grab $17 million worth of ear infection drug from N.C. company
Federal marshals seized $16.5 million worth of drugs from Chapel Hill, N.C.-based Deston Therapeutics that the Food & Drug Administration says the firm was selling without its approval.
U.S. Marshals seized all lots of Auralgan Otic Solution from a Deston warehouse in Brooks, Ky., Feb. 16. Auralgan is a prescription drug used to treat pain and inflammation associated with ear infections.
BG Medicine ends its first Wall Street week on the upswing
It took a long time to get there, but BG Medicine Inc. (NSDQ:BGMD) ended its first week as a public company in Wall Street’s good graces.
The Waltham, Mass.-based diagnostics company saw share prices jump 5 percent during its first week of public trading, based on the Feb. 17 closing price of $8.39. Shares were up 1.5 percent through mid-day trading today, to $8.58, before retreating slightly.
All in all, it was a big week for the company — CEO Pieter Muntendam even got a chance to ring the NASDAQ exchange’s opening bell Feb. 16.
Stealthy MetaModix looks for new approach to diabetes, bariatric surgery
A stealthy Minnesota medical device company is moving ahead with plans to develop a minimally invasive approach to bariatric surgery and better solve the problem of Type II diabetes.
MetaModix is one-third of the way through a $1.9 million angel round, according to a federal regulatory filing and company executives. It is using the money to develop its product and perform some preclinical testing. MetaModix hopes to be in European clinical trials by early next year, said Kedar Belhe, the company’s chief executive officer.

Yesterday was a strange one on Wall Street for Neoprobe Corp. (NYSE:NEOP), as the company’s shares hit a 52-week but ended the day down about 3 percent.
In early trading Thursday, NEOP shares reached a 52-week high of $3.93, before falling throughout the rest of the day and closing at $3.73.
