Medtech funding soars in Minnesota in Q2

Minnesota medical device startups got a big boost in funding in the 2nd quarter of 2014, with 134% more money invested than during the same period last year, according to a new report.

The numbers suggest greater interest in early-stage deals, according to LifeScience Alley, the North Star State’s medical device and life sciences lobbying group.

RenovoRx closes $1M series B financing round

RenovoRx closed its Series B financing round, bringing in about $1.2 million for the catheter maker.

The San Jose, Calif.-based medical device company is working on catheter technology that directly delivers fluids to the peripheral vascular system. The financing round was led by angel funding group Golden Seeds, alongside the Angels’ Forum, Astia Angels and Amidzad Partners.

CAZ Investments raises $29M fund | Wall Street Beat

CAZ Investments raised a nearly $29 million funding round it plans to use to back medical companies that already have products on the market.

The Houston-based asset management firm reeled in $28.7 million from 61 unnamed investors, according to a regulatory filing.

CAZ Investments chairman Christopher Zook said the firm plans to use the cash to invest in commercialized companies.

Report: Fewer angels and less early funding in 2012

Angel investors in the U.S. are making a comeback of sorts with total dollars still on the rise, but funders are shying away from early-stage investments and leaning toward expansion financing, according to a new report from the UNH Center for Venture Research.

Medical device angel investments jump in 2012

The medical device industry isn’t being left behind when it comes to angel investing, according to data provided to MassDevice.com from the investment data firm CB Insights.

Angel- and seed-round financing (typically $1.5 million or less) jumped dramatically in 2012, accounting for about 27% of all investment in the medical device industry. That’s a 50% increase compared with 2011.

Angels in America: Early-stage investment rebounds | Wall Street Beat

Angel investors started to come out of their shells during the first half of the year with angel investments up more than 3% compared with H1 2011, according to research out of the University of New Hampshire, and medical device companies took the lion’s share of the backing.

The medical device and equipment sector grabbed 24% of total angel investment during the first six months of the year, according to a study from UNH’s Center for Venture Research.

If you’re a startup medical device company looking for an angel, it pays to go west, according to a new report.

The most active angel investors for medical device, diagnostics, biotechnology and other life science companies appear to be clustering, according to a new report by Silicon Valley Bank and the Angel Resource Institute.

Tribogenics lands $2.5M for next-gen X-ray tech | Funding Roundup

UCLA spin-out Tribogenics landed $2.5 million from a network of angel investors and Flywheel Ventures for the commercialization of its next-generation x-ray technology.

Tribogenics’ technology, developed at UCLA by Carlos Camara, enables low-cost X-ray sources for scientific instruments, security screening and medical devices.

RIP Alex Barkas of Prosper Venture Partners | MassDevice.com On Call

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Alex Barkas, a venture capitalist with Prosper Venture Partners, died unexpectedly Nov. 21. He was 64.

Barkas had been a managing director at Prospect since 1997. He served on the boards of many biotech companies during his career, including Complete Genomics (NSDQ:GNOM), Geron (NSDQ:GERN), Tercica, Amicus and Novacept.

Prospect posted a brief memorial to Barkas, whose cause of death was undetermined as of Nov. 23, according to Xconomy:
