Zimmer Holdings Inc. (NYSE:ZMH) filed a lawsuit against three law firms waging an advertising campaign against the company’s NexGen knee replacement system.
The Warsaw, Ind.-based artificial knee maker is seeking an injunction for the Internet and television-based advertisements proclaiming that the implant “has a high failure rate, causes pain and is otherwise defective,” according to documents filed Feb. 16 with the U.S. District Court for the Northern Indiana.
Medtronic spins spine technology patent ruling
Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT) is touting a ruling by the U.S. Appeals Court for the Federal Circuit affirming its rights to a pair of patent claims, even though it’s still waiting on a lower court to decide if the $2.7 million award in the case should be reduced.
The court upheld two of the U.S. District Court for Eastern Pennsylvania’s rulings concerning alleged spine technology patent infringement by Globus Medical Inc., but ordered the lower court to reconsider a $2.7 million award to Medtronic.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company began a "patent interference" process against Life Technologies Corp. (NSDQ:LIFE) in March 2009 regarding patent claims by both companies on single-molecule sequencing technology.

TriMed settles patent suit with Stryker
TriMed Inc.’s four-year-old patent suit against Stryker Corp. (NYSE:SYK) came to a conclusion with the companies entering into a licensing agreement.
The Valencia, Calif.-based orthopedic device maker sued Stryker in March 2006 for infringing on IP covering its radial pin plate and ullnar pin plate wrist fracture repair devices, according to court documents. The companies settled the case out of court in October 2010; it was formally dismissed by the U.S. District Court for Central California in December.

An eight-person jury in the U.S. District Court for Delaware found that technology employed in Franklin, Tenn.-based RyMed’s InVision Plus IV connector infringes upon two patents owned by ICU Medical.
