Pacific Biosciences scores patent win over Life Technologies

Pacific Biosciences of California Inc. (NSDQ:PACB) won a favorable decision from the U.S. Patent Office over a competitor.

The Menlo Park, Calif.-based company began a "patent interference" process against Life Technologies Corp. (NSDQ:LIFE) in March 2009 regarding patent claims by both companies on single-molecule sequencing technology.

Congress, nearly united, averts Medicare payment cut. The U.S. House gave final approval on Thursday to a bill that would avert a 25 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors by freezing reimbursement rates at current levels until the end of next year, reports the New York Times. President Obama, who hailed the nearly unanimous action by Congress, promised to sign the legislation.

Complete Genomics sets price for IPO a nose ahead of Pacific Biosciences offering

Complete Genomics Inc. yesterday filed for an initial public offering that could be worth up to $96.6 million, and if the popularity of a competing genome sequencing company’s stock is an indicator for its success, Complete Genomics won’t have much trouble hitting its mark.

Pacific Biosciences of California Inc. (NSDQ:PACB) entered the market today and raised $200 million in its IPO. The company is working on a whole-genome sequencing device that would deliver "real-time" observation of DNA-related processes.

Helicos slaps Pacific Biosciences with patent infringement suit

Helicos Biosciences Corp. (NSDQ:HLCS) slapped competitor Pacific Biosciences of California Inc. with a patent infringement lawsuit alleging that Pacific’s SMRT single-molecule DNA sequencing technology violates a quartet of Helicos patents.

The lawsuit, filed Aug. 27 in the U.S. District Court for Delaware by Cambridge, Mass.-based Helicos, accuses Pacific Biosciences of infringing two patents it owns and another two it licenses, covering sequencing-by-synthesis methods that use labeled nucleotides to analyze single strands of DNA.

Helicos loses a lap to Illumina in race for cheap genome sequencing

Illumina Inc. (NSDQ:ILMN) put some distance between itself and its competitors this week, as it revealed equipment capable of sequencingthe human genome for less than $10,000.

The San Diego-based company unveiled its HiSeq 2000 at the annual J.P. Morgan Health Care Conference in San Francisco, where CEO Jay Flatley said a Hong Kong-based genomics institute called BGI bought 128 of the $690,000 systems, according to the Wall Street Journal.
