Terason said yesterday it donated one of its uSmart 3200T portable ultrasound systems to Pope Francis to support the medical capabilities offered by the Vatican Medical Center.
Pope Francis personally accepted the device during a papal mass, the company said.
“The uSmart 3200T system is specifically designed for emergency medicine and critical care diagnoses in hospital settings and remote areas. Its unique features easily allow for maximum utilization to service the elderly, very sick and difficult to reach patients. Additionally, the system will assist physician users in early detection to develop a course of action to avoid more serious diseases,” general manager Jeffrey Sirek said in a press release.
The uSmart 3200T is a touchscreen, tablet based ultrasound system designed for extra portability. The ultrasound unit is attached to the back of the tablet and is connected via FireWire.
Terason said the system was chosen as the “system of choice” to support the Vatican through a new collaborative effort.
In August 2013, Terason said it won 510(k) clearance from the FDA for the uSmart 3200T.
The Burlington, Mass.-based ultrasound equipment company pitched the 5-pound tablet as an ideal solution for emergency and critical care, anesthesia and other, more mobile medical uses.
