Competitive Technologies lands Medicare coverage for pain management device

Competitive Technologies said it secured a favorable decision concerning Medicare coverage for its Calmare pain management device.

The Fairfield, Conn.-based medical device company develops products for wound and pain management. The Calmare is the company’s flagship product, and is used to treat neurological pain.

VertiFlex lands coverage from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

VertiFlex won reimbursement coverage from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the company’s Totalis direct decompression system for treatment of spinal stenosis.

Cytomedix touts reimbursement win

Cytomedix (OTC:CMXI) touted a reimbursement win from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for plasma systems including its AutoloGel product.

The coverage decision includes Cytomedix’s platelet-rich plasma system for patients with chronic ulcers and wounds, under the Coverage with Evidence Development program, a CMS guidance policy that gathers data and public comments to include in coverage decisions.

Stent situation: a victory for coverage

A federal study of a new stent designed to prevent repeat strokes was stopped early because 2 1/2 times (14.7%) more people either died or had a repeat stroke after receiving the stent than those who received drugs and counseling (5.8%). The $20 million study, stopped after just 451 stroke victims had been enrolled because of the alarming trend in the results, was sponsored by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke.
