In January 2013, Medical device companies began paying a 2.3% excise tax on U.S. Sales in order to pay for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
The levy is expected to generate some $30 billion over the next 10 years.

AtriCure’s Q1 losses widen, despite growing sales
AtriCure (NSDQ:ATRC) reported increased 1st-quarter sales and affirmed its 2013 sales and earnings guidance.
The West Chester, Ohio-based medical device company posted losses of $1.9 million, or -10¢ per share, on sales of $19.4 million for the 3 months ended March 31, for top-line growth of 11.2%. Losses were up 19.9% compared with Q1 2012.

AtriCure (NSDQ:ATRC) reported wider losses for 2012 and missed Wall Street’s expectations with its Q4 and full-year results, sending shares down on The Street last week.
The West Chester, Ohio-based medical device company posted losses of $2.0 million, or 12¢ per share, on sales of $18.4 million for the 3 months ended Dec. 31, 2012, for top-line growth of 9.6% and a loss reduction of 2.9%.

AtriCure (NSDQ:ATRC) priced a public offering of nearly 3.5 million shares of stock at $7.25 per share, saying it expects net proceeds of about $23.5 million.
The West Chester, Ohio-based medical device company said it granted underwriter Piper Jaffray a 30-day over-allotment option for another 521,000 shares.
