Staar Surgical, BD, and Acutus Medical all filed layoff notices with the state of California over the past month, with more than 200 jobs affected.
The WARN notices to the California Employment Development Department this month included:
- Staar Surgical is letting go of 100 employees in Monrovia and five in Aliso Viejo, with the separations going into effect on April 21. The company plans to still have more than 550 employees in Southern California. MedtechDive says Staar Surgical, which makes implantable eye lenses, cited weak demand in China as playing a role in the job cuts.
- BD reported that it is in the process of laying off 90 employees at two CareFusion locations in San Diego as it moves MMS infusion manufacturing, engineering and quality functions to other locations. The job cuts started in December 2024 and are expected to be completed by mid-March.
- On April 7, Acutus Medical will lay off 24 employees in Carlsbad, in addition to the 57 laid off late last year. The company previously announced it would solely focus on producing left-heart access products, a portfolio it sold to Medtronic for $50 million.
Today, Laguna Hills, California–based Adagio Medical said it also planned job cuts, though it did not disclose how many workers were affected.
In a statement shared with MassDevice, BD said of its San Diego layoffs:
Many of these affected roles are associated with previously disclosed actions the company took in September 2024 to ensure we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. Additionally, many of the roles are field service-based, with affected employees residing outside of San Diego. BD has been an active member of the San Diego community for more than 25 years, and we are dedicated to the success of our approximately 3,800 employees in the greater San Diego area. The San Diego community is home to one of the largest BD employee populations in the U.S., and the company remains committed to continue investing in these operations and the San Diego community over the long term.
Spokespeople for Staar Surgical, Bio-Rad and Acutus Medical couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
