The procedure used the company’s SSi Mantra surgical robotic system and SSi MantrAsana tele-surgeon console. With this combination, operators utilized the surgical robot platform to operate on a patient in Indore, India, over a distance of more than 4,500 miles from the surgeon located at the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Perth, Australia.
SS Innovations’ Mantra — which it submitted to the FDA for 510(k) clearance at the end of 2025 — features a modular, 3D vision, open-console design with ergonomics that the company describes as superior. It engages machine learning models to improve safety and efficiency during procedures.

On May 2, 2026, Dr. Mohit Bhandari remotely performed the live telesurgery, a robotic gastrojejunostomy. This procedure creates a new connection between the stomach and the middle small intestine (jejunum) to bypass the duodenum.
To conduct the procedure, Bhandari utilized the SSi MantrAsana tele-surgeon console, a compact self-contained chair-based version of the larger SSi Mantra surgeon command center that enables portability and requires less space. This facilitates the performance of telesurgeries from a wide range of locations, including physician offices.
SS Innovations reports more than 170 telesurgeries, including intricate cardiac procedures, to date. The company completed the first robotic cardiac surgeries in the Americas with the system in June 2025. Then, it reported the first robotic telesurgery for weight loss a couple of weeks later.
In September 2025, it announced the world’s first pediatric pyeloplasty telesurgery using Mantra. Then, in November 2025, the company completed the first telesurgery performed with its new Tele Surgeon Console (TSC). That built up to its December submission to the FDA.
Last month, the company unveiled new innovations for its surgical robot platform, including a drone for deployment, a mobile operating room and more.
