Siemens Healthineers announced today that it entered into a strategic partnership with Stryker in the field of neurovascular robotics.
The collaboration aims to develop a unique robotic system capable of performing a range of neurovascular procedures. Those include elective and emergency procedures like treatments for strokes and aneurysms.
Siemens Healthineers brings its expertise in robotics and image-guided therapy, while Stryker adds leadership in neurovascular technologies. The partnership incorporates multiple facets of development, according to a news release. Those include robotic system design, access device and implant integration, imaging for robotic navigation and procedural workflow optimization.
The companies say their first-of-its-kind collaboration brings together two industry leaders aiming to deliver timely access to stroke treatment and higher precision in aneurysm treatment.
Siemens Healthineers and Stryker seek to bring together robotics, imaging and therapeutic devices in a single ecosystem. They hope to enhance physician performance, improve procedural precision and enable faster treatment. Initially, the companies aim to focus on co-developing their integrated ecosystem and validating its clinical value.
This marks a new foray into surgical robotics for Siemens Healthineers, which first made its move into the space with its $1.1 billion buyout of Corindus in 2019. However, the company in 2023 announced the discontinuation of the use of its Corindus surgical robotics for cardiology procedures — even as it kept the door open for neurological procedures.
This is the second major partnership that Siemens Healthineers has announced in recent days. Last weekend, it announced a new collaboration with Cook Medical on interventional medicine. They aim to combine Siemens Healthineers’ real-time MRI imaging with Cook Medical’s deep interventional procedure expertise.
Commentary from Siemens Healthineers and Stryker officials
Carsten Bertram, head of Advanced Therapies at Siemens Healthineers, said:
“Neurovascular diseases – primarily strokes and aneurysms – carry a massive global burden. Stroke is the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of disability in adults globally. We are excited to announce this partnership, especially with Stryker, a leading player in the field of neurovascular care. Together, we are uniquely positioned to create an ecosystem of image-guidance, robotics and devices. This meaningful innovation will enable physicians to deliver more precise and timely care to patients around the world.”
Jim Marucci, president of Stryker’s Neurovascular division, said:
“Stryker and Siemens Healthineers have the joint goal to advance neurovascular care through innovation. By combining our deep expertise in stroke therapy devices with the leadership of Siemens Healthineers in robotics and imaging, we aim to simplify workflows, enhance precision, and accelerate care. Together, we are taking an important step toward transforming how neurovascular procedures are performed – and ultimately, working to improve outcomes for patients worldwide.”
