PowerVision raises $30M for FluidVision implantable lens

Ophthalmic devices maker PowerVision finally put a ribbon on its $30 million Series D funding round, planning on using the funds to advance clinical trials in support of regulatory approvals in Europe and the U.S.
The company has previously won the backing of companies including Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) and Johnson & Johnson. New investors Aisling Capital and Correlation Venture Partners and existing funder Venrock helped close off the latest round by putting in the last $10 million, according to a press release. Benvenue Medical raises $64M for spinal devices

Spinal devices maker Benvenue Medical is looking to expand its U.S. footprint with the funds from a newly closed $64 million financing round, the company announced today.
Benvenue hopes to widen its presence and boost manufacturing of its minimally invasive spinal repair devices, using remaining funds for working capital and general corporate growth strategies. The company’s Kiva vertebral augmentation device is already on the U.S. market and Benvenue is preparing to submit its Luna interbody system for FDA review. Read more
Medtronic puts $17M into community chronic disease program | MassDevice.com On Call

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Medical device industry giant Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) launched a new 5-year program to provide care to patients in underserved areas around the world, putting $17 million into initiatives to improve healthcare at the community level.
The HealthRise project aims to assist patients in Brazil, India, South Africa and the U.S. with management of chronic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, starting by bringing in health experts to evaluate local care systems. The Medtronic Philanthropy initiative will then provide grants to community groups to bolster local health services for patients with chronic diseases. Read more
