Outset Medical hires Amazon’s top health AI engineer as its CTO

June 23, 2021 By Sean Whooley

Outset MedicalOutset Medical (NSDQ:OM) announced today that it appointed Jean-Olivier Racine as its new chief technology officer.

Racine, a veteran of more than two decades in the technology industry, previously worked as the head of engineering and science for Amazon Web Services (AWS) Health AI, where he managed Amazon Comprehend Medical, Amazon HealthLake and more health services in development, according to a news release.

San Jose, Calif.-based Outset is the creator of the Tablo hemodialysis system. The company said Racine’s new role will have him oversee the strategic advancement of the company’s product technology, amplify the company’s data-driven innovation engine to elevate the patient care experience and drive operating efficiencies for providers.

“Jean-Olivier’s knowledge of the development of high-scale and high-availability services for the storage of health data, such as HealthLake, is critical to the innovation initiatives we intend to pursue in order to empower patients and healthcare providers,” Outset Medical CEO Leslie Trigg said in the release. “His background in designing scalable and performant cloud architectures for at-home health and consumer products, such as Amazon Halo and Fire TV, and in using machine learning for retrieving health insights from data, such as Comprehend Medical, will be invaluable as we continue to invent in ways that uplift the dialysis patient population.”

Outset’s Tablo hemodialysis system sends patient treatment data to electronic medical record systems and to TabloHub, a proprietary, cloud-based provider portal for aggregating all patient and Tablo fleet records.

The company said the information captured by the platform fuels data analytics and machine learning algorithms that will be utilized by Racine in the new role as he seeks to improve the technology, create service efficiencies and uncover new opportunities.

“I was drawn to join Outset Medical because of the vast opportunity the dialysis industry presents, especially with regards to utilizing technology and AI for the development of new care modalities,” Racine said. “Throughout my career, I have seen the progress the health tech industry has made as artificial intelligence, machine learning and the consumer-driven digital experience has become a reality for numerous patient populations.

“I look forward to using my expertise to build upon the incredible strides Outset has already made with Tablo, and to create new efficiencies for patients and providers as we continue to move towards a tech-enabled future.”
