Otsuka ICU Medical, which manufactures IV supplies, recently broke ground on a 500,000-square-foot expansion to its North Austin campus, according to the Austin American-Statesman as relayed by Yahoo.
Otsuka ICU Medical is a joint venture between Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory and ICU Medical that launched last year.
The IV supplies facility is under construction just two years after Hurricane Helene damaged a major Baxter plant. Health providers faced shortages for a time, exposing the need for a more reliable and resilient IV products supply chain.
The $500 million project will roughly double the size of the existing campus, with completion targeted for 2030.
This groundbreaking “marks the start of possible future expansions and additional life sciences investment from the joint venture in Austin,” Kent Hamaker, senior director of science and technology for ICU Medical, told the Austin American-Statesman.
Otsuka ICU Medical announced its intention to invest $500 million in U.S. IV solutions manufacturing last month.
Yoshifumi Fujimoto, CEO of Otsuka ICU Medical LLC, said at the time: “This expansion reflects our commitment to long-term growth in a clinically essential market. By strengthening our US manufacturing footprint, expanding non-DEHP capabilities, and introducing innovation, we are enhancing supply reliability for North American customers while positioning ourselves to better support future regulatory and legislative requirements.”
