
The New Richmond, Wisconsin-based developer of non-invasive testing technology says the 90-second SNAP concussion test combines eye tracking with symptom severity to provide a multi-modal concussion assessment for clinicians.
SNAP works indoors and outdoors, diagnosing concussion with 90% sensitivity and 94% specificity. Oculogica said that marks the highest accuracy for a concussion test cleared by the FDA.
The non-invasive test offers easy administration and requires no pre-injury baseline. It can be used immediately after a head injury, with tests possible on the sideline or in the clinic. SNAP has a screen that displays a stimulus for the patient’s eyes to follow during the exam. Its eye-tracking camera measures eye movements for the duration of the exam. A computer then applies an analysis algorithm to the tracked eye movements to diagnose concussion.
Oculogica said it received funding for SNAP from the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD). It had been developing the test for four years. The company received its first FDA clearance for the EyeBOX concussion test in December 2018. That marked the first test cleared by the FDA that eliminated the requirement for a pre-injury baseline. SNAP brings the company’s total FDA clearances for concussion to six.
