Medical Microinstruments announced the first clinical use of two new technologies to expand its robotic-assisted microsurgery platforms.
The company unveiled its NanoWrist dissection instruments and the Synaptix digital surgery platform. Clinicians at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in London performed the first cases with the technologies. The company said it marks a significant milestone in the evolution of robotic-assisted microsurgery. These new technologies enable precise tissue dissection and integrated digital workflows for the Symani robotic surgery system.
Symani provides advanced solutions for a range of open surgeries. That includes post-mastectomy breast cancer reconstruction, extremity reconstruction using free tissue transfer and lymphatic system repair. The company’s tiny NanoWrist instruments help to access and suture small, delicate anatomies.
Medical Microinstruments won FDA de novo clearance for Symani, covering soft tissue manipulation to perform microsurgery, in April 2024.
The new NanoWrist instruments include scissors and forceps. Medical Microinstruments says they’re the world’s first fully wristed robotic instruments designed specifically for dissection in open microsurgery. The scissors enable delicate and precise dissection of soft tissues during tasks like vessel preparation and tissue resection. Meanwhile, the forceps allow for gentle vessel handling and fine manipulation.
Synaptix, meanwhile, provides data-driven visual enhancements and workflow efficiencies. The company called it the first digital platform built specifically for open microsurgery. It designed it to reduce variability, streamline case setup, and improve autonomy in the OR.
These initial cases come as part of a limited launch in Europe ahead of full commercial availability.
“Dissection and digital surgery capabilities are critically important ‘firsts’ for MMI as we continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in robotic microsurgery, moving beyond anastomosis into other areas of open procedures,” said Mark Toland, CEO of MMI. “Our expanding portfolio of products is evolving into a comprehensive solution that empowers surgeons to do more — with greater precision and control — across more of the procedure. These advancements reflect our commitment to delivering innovation that transforms care, enhances surgical performance, and ultimately helps restore quality of life for more patients around the world.”
