Olympus announced today that it appointed Bob White, former Medtronic EVP, as its new CEO, effective June 1, 2025.

White succeeds Yasuo Takeuchi, who took over as acting CEO in October 2024 after then-CEO Stefan Kaufmann resigned over accusations that he bought illegal drugs. Takeuchi spent more than four years as CEO before handing the corner office to Kaufmann in 2023.

In addition to becoming CEO, White will be proposed as a candidate for election to Olympus’ board at the company’s June shareholder meeting.

“We are pleased to name Bob to this pivotal leadership role. He possesses a wealth of experience garnered from his tenure at various esteemed organizations within the medical technology sector. I look forward to welcoming him as a leader who will bring extensive knowledge and expertise to the company.” said Takeuchi. “Over the course of his career, Bob has demonstrated exceptional leadership in driving both transformative growth and strategic initiatives. I am truly pleased that he is bringing this profound expertise and insight to Olympus.”

More about new Olympus CEO Bob White

White previously spent 14 years with medtech giant Medtronic before departing last year amid a reorganization effort.

Medtronic eliminated White’s position as EVP and president of the company’s Medical Surgical Portfolio when it pulled out of the ventilator market. Prior to that, he served as SVP and president of Asia Pacific, having previously spent time at Covidien.

During his time at Covidien, he held positions including president of emerging markets and president of respiratory and monitoring solutions. Medtronic acquired Covidien in a $43 billion deal in 2014. Other experience includes time spent at GE HealthCare, Merge Healthcare and Healthcare Division, IBM.

“I am truly honored and grateful for the trust placed in me by the board of directors and the nominating committee,” White said. “Olympus is an exceptional company, known for its market-leading solutions, cutting-edge technology, and remarkable people. I’m excited to bring my experience to the table and contribute to the company’s ongoing success and growth. I’ve long admired Olympus for its rich Japanese heritage, outstanding products, and unwavering commitment to serving the needs of both clinicians and patients.”
