Hologic
(Nasdaq: HOLX)
notified the state of Connecticut that it plans to cut 86 jobs at its Danbury, Connecticut facility.
CTInsider first reported the layoffs yesterday, Oct. 21. The women’s health and diagnostics company sent a letter notifying Connecticut’s Labor Dept., dated Oct. 18, 2024.
Layoffs at Hologic may raise eyebrows after CFO Karleen Oberton gave an interview earlier this year that leveled harsh criticism at executives resorting to layoffs. The statements followed many workforce reductions in the medtech industry (and elsewhere) over the past few years.
The company also outlined plans in March to close certain international facilities amid product discontinuations and restructuring within its diagnostics business.
According to CTInsider, the Danbury reductions come as part of a transfer of work announced years ago. The outlet says Hologic in October 2021 planned to shift work done at Danbury to a Newark, Delaware, plant. The company expanded that plant to centralize manufacturing with R&D, the report says.
Hologic’s letter provides advanced notice of the closure of the Danbury plant. In December of 2024, the company plans to permanently cease operations at the 37 Apple Ridge location in Danbury.
As a result of the closure, Hologic expects to lay off 71 permanent, full-time employees with an expected final day of Dec. 20. After that date, the company plans to retain a small number of permanent, full-time employees to conduct final post-closure activities. Hologic expects to lay three of those employees off on Jan. 31, 2025. The remaining 12 will be laid off on or around Feb. 14 through Feb. 21, 2025.
Official Hologic statement
A spokesperson for Hologic issued the following statement to MassDevice via email:
“In October 2021, we announced that we would be moving operations to our facility in Newark, Delaware, which has been expanded to centralize manufacturing and R&D. We have been supporting our employees throughout the transition and the majority of employees in Danbury were given the option to relocate to the Newark facility.”
