ForSight Robotics announces first robot-assisted cataract surgery with JASPER platform

ForSight Robotics announced today that it completed its first robot-assisted cataract surgery in a human patient using its JASPER platform.

The JASPER (Joint Aligned System for Precise Eye Robotics) platform — formerly known as Oryom — is touted by ForSight as the world’s first robotic surgery platform for cataracts and widespread eye diseases. JASPER utilizes AI-based algorithms, advanced computer vision, and miniaturized mechanics.

Engineered for precise, consistent ophthalmic procedures, the platform aims to deliver dexterity and maneuverability with an improved ergonomic experience. It can reach any point within the human eye, allowing surgeons to navigate complex angles. It also ensures access to anterior and posterior segments for future glaucoma and retinal surgery treatments.

Dr. Alexey Rapoport performed the first procedure, along with Dr. Robert Edward T. Ang of the Asian Eye Institute in Manila, serving as principal investigator. It marked the first cataract surgery completed from start to finish without the need for general anesthesia, the company said.

ForSight Robotics designed JASPER to democratize access to high-quality cataract surgery, particularly in underserved regions. It aims to address shortages in surgeons and the physical toll that comes with performing the common procedure.

The latest milestone builds on the company’s $125 million Series B financing completed last year. It hopes to now advance toward clinical validation and regulatory submissions.

Commentary from ForSight Robotics leadership and investigators

Dr. Joseph Nathan, ForSight Robotics co-founder, president, and chief medical officer, said:

“This is a defining moment for ophthalmic surgery and the future of global healthcare. With the first successful full robotic cataract procedure in a human patient, this achievement opens the door to dramatically expanding access to sight-restoring surgery for millions around the world.”

Dr. Alexey Rapoport said:

“Performing the first-in-human cataract surgery with the JASPER Platform has been the highlight of my career. Something we could only dream about a few years ago is now a reality. Standing in the operating room, it was clear we were witnessing the future of eye surgery.”

Dr. Fred Moll, a ForSight Robotics investor and board member and the founder of surgical robotics leader Intuitive Surgical, as well as Auris Health, said:

“This milestone represents more than a technical achievement. ForSight Robotics is re-envisioning how eye surgery is done and opening the door to greater standardization across procedures, improved precision, and broader access to vision-saving care.”
