Emanate Biomedical’s Perio PODS include single-use trays customized to each patient based on dental scans, and come preloaded with an engineered hydrogel. Worn twice daily for 30 minutes for up to 15 days, the dressings are designed to prevent further irritation to injured tissue.
“Non-surgical periodontal procedures treat periodontitis, a chronic disease, but create an acute wound — the healing of which is essential to a successful outcome,” Emanate cofounder and CEO Jarret Fass said in a statement. “Yet while wound care is fundamental across medicine, dentistry has historically lacked a purpose-built solution to protect treated tissues at home during the critical healing phase.”
The New York City-based company estimates that about 31 million non-surgical periodontal procedures are performed in the U.S. each year. Emanate said it is currently working to scale up its manufacturing and commercial infrastructure, ahead of a phased rollout planned for next year.
In a randomized clinical trial of 45 participants, conducted at the American Dental Association’s Forsyth Institute, Perio PODS demonstrated reductions in gingival inflammation as well as periodontal pocket depth between the tooth and the gumline. The company said that a larger, multicenter controlled trial is underway through the McGuire Institute and its private-practice periodontal clinical research network.
Emanate previously raised a total of $11 million in funding from NYC’s Pierpoint Capital.
