Fast Five: Precision Neuroscience begins first-in-human brain-computer interface trial, BD expands in Ireland

June 7, 2023 By Danielle Kirsh

Welcome to the MassDevice Fast Five medtech news podcast, the show that keeps you up-to-date on the latest breakthroughs in medical technology. Here’s what you need to know for today, June 7, 2023.

Fast Five by MassDevice · Precision Neuroscience begins first-in-human brain-computer interface trial, BD expands in Ireland

The FDA clearance of DeepX Diagnostics’ teledermatology screening solution marks a significant advancement in remote dermatological care. This innovative technology allows healthcare professionals to assess and diagnose suspected skin cancer lesions remotely, potentially improving access to timely and accurate dermatological evaluations. Fast Five hosts Sean Whooley and Danielle Kirsh share details about the system and what the company essentially hopes to achieve with the technology.

Avatar Medical designed its VR surgical platform to help surgeons better prepare for procedures through VR representations of patients. Patient “avatars” generate instantly from CT scans or MRIs for use with the VR platform. Whooley outlines the company’s latest FDA 510(k) clearance and the prevalence of use among surgeons so far.

Olympus’ plan to establish a series of digital centers based on Odin Vision’s cloud-AI technology signals a transformative step in endoscopy and medical imaging for the company. By leveraging cloud-based artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, these digital centers aim to enhance image analysis, diagnostic accuracy, and collaboration among healthcare professionals. Kirsh and Whooley explain the purpose of the digital centers and how optimistic leaders are at the company.

Brain-computer interfaces are trending in medtech. BCIs offer a direct connection between the brain and external devices, potentially enabling individuals with neurological conditions to regain mobility or communicate using their thoughts. Precision Neuroscience recently initiated its first-in-human trial for its own brain-computer interface to record and map the brain’s activity in unprecedented detail. Whooley discusses the trial and the technology behind the company’s BCI technology.

BD’s ongoing expansion in Ireland showcases the company’s commitment to investing in the country’s healthcare ecosystem. This expansion includes the establishment of new facilities, the creation of job opportunities, and the enhancement of BD’s manufacturing capabilities in Ireland. The Fast Five hosts go over the financial details of the expansion, including how many jobs will be created.
