The funding includes a new debt investment from Trinity Capital and participation from all of the company’s existing major investors. CMR Surgical plans to use funds to support its ambitious growth plans around its Versius surgical robotic platform.
Funds will go toward expanding the Versius to more hospitals around the world, with a major focus on launching Versius in the U.S. The system won FDA clearance in October. CMR Surgical also launched enhancements for the system, including the Ultrasonic Dissector, late last year.

The small-scale surgical robotic system features collaborative arms and bedside units for direct patient access. It also features offers of port placement to best suit the needs of each patient. CMR Surgical aims for Versius to biomimic the human arm.
Versius features 3D HD vision, easy-to-adopt instrument control and a choice of ergonomic working positions. Its open console could potentially reduce stress and fatigue while allowing for clear communication with the surgical team. CMR Surgical reported that more than 30,000 surgical cases around the world have been completed using its Versius system earlier this year.
Other potential uses of funds include advancing surgical robotics innovation and product development. That includes the launch of the newly enhanced Versius Plus. Versius Plus facilitates surgical procedures across all specialties. It includes an expanded instrument portfolio, an improved console, advanced digital insights and a fluorescent imaging system.
CMR Surgical said it continues expanding its clinical footprint with two ongoing clinical trials, too. One evaluates Versius in pediatric surgery and the other in transoral robotic surgery.
“CMR is a competitive, well-established company with a transformative product providing clear clinical value. We are now at a pivotal stage, poised to capitalise on significant opportunities for market expansion, including in the U.S., while continuing to penetrate deeper into existing markets,” said Massimiliano Colella, CMR Surgical CEO.
