CMR Surgical adopts Nvidia AI for next-gen surgical robots

CMR Surgical announced today that it became an early adopter of Nvidia’s IGX Thor platform designed for AI and surgical robotics.

Cambridge, UK-based CMR Surgical said it’s evaluating the integration of IGX Thor into the Versius surgical robotic system. Nvidia designed IGX Thor for more computing power, better energy efficiency and awareness compared to previous platforms.

This marks the second surgical robotics partnership for the AI powerhouse in as many days. Yesterday, Johnson & Johnson MedTech shared new advances in surgical robotic technology with physical AI capabilities through Nvidia. Nvidia also has existing surgical robotics partnerships with companies like Karl Storz’s Asensus, Moon Surgical, Virtual Incision, Neptune Surgical and Stereotaxis.

CMR Surgical aims to improve patient outcomes by leveraging AI in its Versius platform, delivering insights and recommendations in real time at the point of care. The company wants to enable the data captured from every Versius procedure to improve all surgeries.

Versius became the first multi-port, soft tissue general robotic-assisted surgical device to gain clearance through the FDA’s de novo process just over a year ago. The small-scale surgical robotic system features collaborative arms and bedside units for direct patient access. It also features offers of port placement to best suit the needs of each patient. CMR Surgical designed Versius to enable surgeons to perform more minimal access surgery. Its minimally invasive approach assists surgeons accessing the lungs, thymus and esophagus. CMR surgical designed Versius to biomimic the human arm.

According to the company, it plans to evaluate IGX Thor’s AI capabilities for its next generation of Versius.

“Today’s announcement reflects our strategic intent in leveraging the formidable potential of AI and represents a further step forward in our mission to deliver real-time insights that improve outcomes,” said Chris Fryer, CTO at CMR Surgical. “The goal of AI isn’t to replace surgeons, but to empower them. We’re excited to explore how Nvidia IGX Thor can revolutionise the AI capabilities within the Versius ecosystem and look forward to continuing to work closely with the Nvidia team.”
