The U.S. Department of Justice is looking into accusations leveled against cardiologist Dr. Elie Hage Korban and two Tennessee hospitals, alleging that they ran a scheme to defraud government insurance programs through overuse of medical services.
The accuser is fellow Tennessee cardiologist Dr. Wood Deming, who claims Korban falsely dictated symptoms in heart patients to authorize medical procedures for reimbursement by government programs.
Hospital worker protection bill passed by Ohio House
A bill that increases the punishment for assaulting a hospital worker to a fourth-degree felony has passed the Ohio House of Representatives by a wide margin.
While the bill’s prospects in the Senate are uncertain, it’s already progressed farther than a nearly identical bill that never made it to a vote in the state’s prior legislative session.
House Bill 62 passed by a vote of 85 to 12.
Medtronic named in patient lawsuit against Wis. hospital
A Wisconsin man is suing Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT) in a wrongful injury lawsuit against his local hospital for injuries he allegedly sustained during facial surgery.
Ralph Wellmaker of Brooklyn, Wisc. said he lost the ability to blink his right eye after a doctor struck a nerve in his face while performing surgery to remove a parotid tumor, which is located in the salivary glands.

SEC: California inside trader stole Abbott/AMO deal secrets from his daughter
The SEC charged a personal injury lawyer in California with insider trading, accusing Dean Goetz of stealing confidential information on Abbott’s (NYSE:ABT) $2.8 billion acquisition of Advanced Medical Optics from his daughter, who was a lawyer working for AMO at the time.
The agency accused Goetz of reaping an illegal $11,000 profit trading on AMO stock just before the deal went public in January 2009. Unbeknownst to Goetz’s daughter, working on the deal during the winter holidays at her parents’ house, Goetz allegedly stole the information he used to buy 900 shares of AMO stock on Jan. 8, 2009, according to the SEC.
