Federal jury decides against CareFusion in pain pump patent lawsuit
A federal jury this week decided against CareFusion (NYSE:CFN) in a patent lawsuit filed against Sigma International General Medical Apparatus over drug pump technology.
CareFusion had accused Sigma, in a lawsuit filed in February 2010, of patent infringement with the Spectrum intravenous infusion pumps, a claim that jurors rejected.

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Kimberly-Clark subsidiary I-Flow filed a lawsuit against Kentucky surgeon Dr. Bruce Holladay for off-label use of a pain pump that allegedly resulted in injury to a patient, raising the spectre of a slippery slope of physicians held liable in patient injury lawsuits.
Holladay performed reconstructive surgery on a patient in 2007, implanting a pain pump in the patient’s shoulder. When the patient later complained of shoulder pain, he was diagnosed with chondrolysis, a condition in which continuous administration of certain anesthetics can result in the destruction of cartilage.
CareFusion first to win federal wireless data security certs for infusion devices
CareFusion became the first to land wireless data security certification for infusion devices under the Federal Information Processing Standard set by the National Institute of Standards & Technology.
FIPS compliance is now required for all infusion devices running on hospital networks owned by the U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs, according to a press release.
The standard includes stringent wireless and physical security requirements and is designed to protect information, such as electronic health records, which is sensitive but not classified.

Smiths Medical launched its CAD D-Solis variable infusion profile system for homecare pain management in France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
The CADD-Solis VIP system includes an infusion pump, medication safety software and medication cassette reservoirs that attach to the pump.

The recall, the second Class I for SynchroMed this year, came over concerns of defective batteries that can lead to sudden device failure.

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings (NYSE:LH) agreed on a $50 million settlement on a whistleblower lawsuit accusing the company of overcharging Medicaid and giving kickbacks in exchange for referrals for its lab tests.
The complaint accused LabCorp of charging California’s Medicaid program prices as much as five times higher than it charged other customers and offered discounted or free tests to health care providers in exchange for referrals.
