PerkinElmer Inc. (NYSE:PKI) posted strong second-quarter results as its efforts to boost its profile and expand its geographic footprint bore fruit.
The Waltham, Mass.-based diagnostics giant reported revenues of $497.8 million for the three months ended July 4, up 13.6 percent compared with $438.3 million during the same period last year. Net income for the quarter rose 168 percent to $57.6 million, or 49 cents per diluted share, compared with $21.5 million, or 18 cents per diluted share, during Q2 2009.
Neoprobe Inc. (OTC:NEOP) has applied for listing on the New York Stock Exchange.
The move would make the Dublin, Ohio-based company more attractive to institutional investors and provide more liquidity for existing investors, according to a press release. CEO David Bupp said it could take “a number of weeks” before Neoprobe receives approval for the listing.
NeuroMetrix Inc. (NSDQ:NURO) took a pasting during the second quarter, as sales plunged 43.0 percent and net losses widened by 151.0 percent, forcing the nerve testing equipment maker to lay off 25 workers, reorganize its sales force and table the development of its Ascend anesthesia device.
The Waltham, Mass.-based firm reported net losses of $4.5 million, or 20 cents per share, on sales of $3.9 million during the three months ended June 30. That compares with net losses of $1.8 million, or 13 cents per share, on sales of $6.8 million during Q2 2009.
Parexel International Corp. (NSDQ:PRXL) wrapped up its fiscal 2010 reporting a 19.4 percent increase in overall sales and adjusted net earnings of $19.1 million.
The 32-cent per share adjusted profit — which excludes just under $10 million for restructuring costs and other special charges during the three months ended June 30 — topped both Wall Street expectations and year-ago comparisons. The Waltham, Mass.-based clinical research organization also boosted its revenue guidance for the upcoming fiscal year by $20 million, up to a new range of between $1.27 billion to $1.31 billion.
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania say they have found that a test using spinal fluid can accurately identify individuals who will develop Alzheimer’s disease, according to a report in the New York Times
The researchers’ study analyzed spinal fluid from 300 subjects looking for amyloid beta and tau proteins, according to the paper. Amyloid forms plaques in the the brain, while tau accumulates in dead and dying nerve cells in the brain.
The Gray Lady reported that the research included 114 people with normal memories, 200 with mild cognitive impairment and 102 with Alzheimer’s disease.
UnitedHealth Group’s (NYSE:UNH) health information technology subsidiary Ingenix will acquire compliance consulting company Executive Health Resources.
Ingenix didn’t disclose the price for the Newton Square, Pa.-based company, but a Bloomberg report last week put the figure at about $1.5 billion.

Singapore’s HSA updates medical device Technical Specification
Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority (HSA) included secondary assembly activity guidelines in its medical device Technical Specification 01 (TS-01) in early July 2010. Manufacturers that make use of secondary assembly must meet new regulations by August 2011. HSA defines secondary assembly activity as "the process of repackaging a medical device from its original packaging into another packaging, without breach of the primary package, before the medical device is supplied." The guidelines are to maintain the quality, safety and integrity of medical devices.
