Court Square Group picks up QA Edge’s validation business

Court Square acquired QA Edge’s computer validation business for an undisclosed amount.

Springfield-based Court Square, which provides clinical, regulatory, manufacturing and quality assurance services to life science companies, said the deal augments its QC consulting practice and is part of its planned expansion on the East Coast.

The QA Edge business is based in Garnet Valley, Pa.

NuOrtho Surgical raises $1 million in series A round

Two former executives from Johnson & Johnson and Stryker raised $1 million to fund the development of a device that uses radio frequencies to repair torn or frayed cartilage.

NuOrtho Surgical Inc. in Fall River raised the money from private investors and “individuals familiar with the orthopedic industry,” according to a press release.

The funds will be used to file for a 510k premarket notification with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, ahead of a planned 2010 launch of NuOrtho’s first product.

Vitalize Consulting buys out r3 Health

Vitalize Consulting Solutions Inc. acquired r3 Health Partners LLC for an undisclosed amount.

The Reading-based healthcare information technology software and service provider said the deal expands its footprint to the West Coast, where r3 has its Santa Ana, Calif. base. Vitalize also has operations in Kennett Square, Pa.

Former r3 managing principal John Dal Poggetto will join Vitalize as a senior vice president.

Phase One sells surgical anchoring line to California company

Phase One Medical LLC sold its anchoring technology line to Nitinol Devices & Components of Fremont, Calif., for an undisclosed amount.

The deal was negotiated by Hatch Medical LLC, a technology brokerage firm, with which Phase One has collaborated in the past.

The anchoring technology is used to secure instruments during minimally invasive cardiovascular and radiology procedures and is one of four product lines the Carver-based company produces.

CorNova integrates fiberoptics into stents

CorNova Inc. is hoping to take stents to a new level by integrating fiberoptic technology into existing balloon catheter design.

The Burlington medical device manufacturer is developing balloon catheters designed to measure blood vessels from within the balloon during procedures, with an eye toward reducing incidences of stent restenosis (thrombosis), Mass High Tech reported.

John E. Sununu joins Boston Scientific board

Former U.S. Senator for New Hampshire John E. Sununu joined Boston Scientific Corp.‘s board of directors.

The Natick-based medical device colossus said March 2 that Sununu was elected to the board to replace Joel Fleishman, who will resign his seat in May.

Federal probe of Stryker ongoing in off-label promotion case

A federal investigation of Hopkinton’s Stryker Biotech is still underway after a second guilty plea by a former Massachusetts sales manager for the Michigan-based Stryker Corp. subsidiary, which develops bone injury repair products, according to news reports.

FDA to track kids’ exposure to BPA in medical devices

The federal Food and Drug Administration plans to track pediatric patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass and hemodialysis at two hospitals in Washington and Michigan for exposure to bisphenol-A, a chemical used to make plastics.

At issue is whether BPA in the plastics used in medical devices can be harmful to children undergoing procedures that require extended exposure to the materials, such as heart bypass operations and dialysis.

Millstone Medical Outsourcing opens second facility in Fall River

Millstone Medical Outsourcing plans to open a second inspection and clean room facility in Fall River.

The 30,000-square-foot building will include a mechanical inspection area, clean room and packaging facilities.

It’s the third location for the inspection and clean room outsourcing service provider, which operates another clean room facility and its headquarters in Fall River and a loaner kit processing and distribution center in Memphis. The new shop takes its total square footage to roughly 95,000 square feet.

Amicas plunges into the red, along with its share price

Amicas Inc. posted revenues of $50.4 million last year, up 9.3 percent compared with 2007, but slipped deep into the red during the fourth quarter as the value of its shares plunged.

The Boston radiology and medical image software provider said it took a $27.3 million impairment charge “primarily due to the sustained decline in the market value of the company’s equity during the fourth quarter of 2008,” adding that it doesn’t expect any material impact from the charge over the long term.

FDA hops onto Serica’s SeriScaffold

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hopped onto Serica Technologies Inc.’s SeriScaffold product, granting the silk-based surgical mesh clearance to hit the market.

The Medford-based growth-stage device maker’s flagship product is designed to repair and remodel damaged connective tissue, avoiding the erosion and scar formation that can result from surgery.
