Abbott launches next-gen CardioMEMS Hero pulmonary artery pressure reader in US

Abbott (NYSE:ABT) said today that it launched its CardioMEMS HERO Device, a next-generation pulmonary artery (PA) pressure reader in the U.S.

In a LinkedIn post, the medtech giant wrote:

“Our CardioMEMS HERO Device is now available in the U.S. With simple setup and easy connection, this smaller and lighter patient reader is designed to support consistent pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) data collection to help clinicians better manage heart failure care.”

Remote monitoring technologies like the Abbott CardioMEMS sensor enable better management of heart failure. The CardioMEMS sensor’s design enables it to help people and their physicians proactively manage heart failure. It also helps to potentially prevent events that could lead to hospitalization.

CardioMEMS implantation takes place in the pulmonary artery via a minimally invasive procedure. The paperclip-sized sensor wirelessly transmits data about heart rates and pressures to the patient’s physicians. This continuous data stream aids in adjusting treatment plans and keeping hospital admissions at bay.

Abbott’s CardioMEMS Hero Device features new design features to empower heart failure patients and clinicians. It offers daily insights for detecting and combating heart failure progression. Abbott says the platform represents a new component of the company’s CardioMEMS HF system. The next-generation technology received FDA approval in February.

The CardioMEMS HERO Device comes in smaller than the system’s previous model at a size similar to a laptop case, 60% lighter than the previous edition. It can also fit inside a carry-on suitcase for more convenient travel. Hero also features Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity for easy setup and virtual readings anywhere clinicians have signal. They can receive readings and communicate any medication or lifestyle change recommendations to patients. This can occur before a patient even feels symptoms, keeping them out of the hospital.
