McEvoy called Schmid “a trusted friend and partner” in a LinkedIn post announcing her resignation.
In a statement, Schmid said he was honored to be appointed to the leadership role.
“Building on my 30-year career at Johnson & Johnson, I look forward to leading our incredible team of associates around the world who are propelling our MedTech business into the next era of healthcare,” he said.
Schmid has worked for New Brunswick, New Jersey-based J&J for three decades, most recently serving as group chair of J&J MedTech Asia Pacific (APAC).
“During his tenure, the APAC region has delivered above-market growth and further strengthened our leadership position across multiple businesses,” J&J said. “Mr. Schmid has also been instrumental in elevating the role of the region as a growing center for MedTech experimentation, digital innovation, and talent.”
He was previously J&J MedTech’s chief strategic customer officer, a role in which J&J said he “helped lead transformational changes to Johnson & Johnson’s business-to-business relationships with health systems in the U.S.”
As J&J MedTech’s APAC chair, Schmid says on LinkedIn, “I work alongside our passionate employees to improve the health outcomes of patients across the region. We do this by driving innovation, through new partnerships, delivering leading medical technology and advancing surgical training. I also champion our efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion, to better represent the communities we serve. I am inspired by this mission and by the talent of our people in Asia Pacific.”
According to Schmid’s LinkedIn account, he joined J&J in 1993 when he took a position in “strategic accounts and professional sales” at LifeScan, the blood glucose monitoring business that J&J sold in 2018.
But before the divestiture, Schmid climbed the ladder at LifeScan, becoming director of acquisitions and integration in 2001, GM of U.K. and Ireland in 2003, and then VP of Europe, Middle East and Asia in 2006.
In 2009 Schmid became VP of global strategic marketing at J&J’s Ethicon unit and was promoted to president in 2012.
After that, Schmid became chief strategic customer officer for J&J Medical Devices (now called J&J MedTech) and then J&J MedTech APAC chair in 2018. As APAC’s leader, Schmid was based in Singapore, where J&J MedTech opened a new APAC headquarters earlier that year.
Schmid is a board member of the Asia Pacific Medical Technology Association (APACMed). His bio at that industry organization’s website calls him “a champion for the value of diversity, currently leading the company’s diversity and inclusion efforts across Asia Pacific.”
The bio also said Schmid was “instrumental in establishing Johnson & Johnson’s global partnership with Operation Smile, focused on bringing safe and effective surgical care to children suffering from cleft lip or cleft palate.”
Schmid has worked in six countries on four continents, the bio continued, and said he was educated in South Africa, Canada and the U.K.
Schmid’s LinkedIn says he earned his bachelor of the arts degree from Western University in London, Ontario, and an MBA from Richmond American University London in England.
