SS Innovations (Nasdaq:SSII) announced today that it completed its first intercontinental robotic cardiac telesurgery.
Utilizing its SSi Mantra 3 surgical robotic system, company Chair and CEO Dr. Sudhir Srivastava performed the procedure. Srivastava conducted a robotic atrial septal defect closure remotely from the global headquarters of the Institute of Research Against Digestive Cancer (IRCAD) in Strasbourg, France. It took place during the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) Annual Meeting.
The procedure spanned more than 4,000 miles from Strasbourg to the operating room at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences in Indore, India. Together, a team successfully completed the surgery without any technical issues and with an imperceptible latency, SS Innovations said. The procedure featured precision and robotic control, showcasing the capabilities of Mantra 3.
Mantra 3 provides capabilities for multi-specialty usage, including in cardiothoracic, head and neck, gynecology, urology, and general surgery. The platform features a modular, 3D vision, open-console design with superior ergonomics. It engages machine learning models to improve safety and efficiency during procedures.
It hopes for approvals in the latter half of 2025. SS Innovations said in May that it expects to submit the system to the FDA this month.
The company completed the first robotic cardiac surgeries in the Americas with the system last month, and then the first robotic telesurgery for weight loss a couple of weeks ago.
“This historic achievement not only demonstrates the advanced capabilities of our SSi Mantra 3 surgical robotic system but also further paves the way for redefining and democratizing global delivery of complex cardiac care, especially in regions with limited access to surgical expertise,” Srivastava said.
