Proprio, Biedermann partner on AI-powered spine surgery

Proprio announced today that it entered into a multi-phase partnership with the Biedermann Group to integrate AI into spine implants.

Initially, the companies want to integrate Biedermann’s advanced spinal implant’s with Proprio’s Paradigm system. Paradigm harnesses AI, computer vision and augmented reality to provide real-time surgical visualization and guidance.

Seattle-based Proprio designed the Paradigm surgical navigation platform to replace traditional surgical navigation technologies. It uses an advanced approach to avoid pitfalls that pull attention away from the patient and disrupt workflows. The FDA cleared Paradigm a year ago and the company announced the successful first-in-human use of Paradigm in October 2023.

Integrating Biedermann’s implants with Paradigm’s insights and 3D navigation could “redefine the standard of care in spine surgery,” the companies say. Proprio and Biedermann aim to enhance surgical accuracy and efficiency and reduce radiation exposure. They hope to provide more intraoperative data to inform surgical decision-making.

Biedermann Motech CEO Markku Biedermann said the companies share a commitment to “revolutionizing spine surgery.”

“This collaboration with Biedermann will further increase the Paradigm platform’s unique capabilities to positively impact patient results through data-based planning and performance. At Proprio, we are committed to providing surgeons with only the best possible tools. We are excited to accelerate this critical partnership with Biedermann so that clinicians and patients alike can benefit from our advanced surgical guidance capabilities,” said Gabriel Jones, CEO and co-founder of Proprio.
