Penumbra launches duo of stroke catheters in Europe

Penumbra (NYSE:PEN) announced today that, with CE mark approval, it launched its new BMX81 and BMX96 neuro access devices in Europe.

The company designed the devices for the neurovascular management of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Penumbra said they represent its “most advanced neuro access offerings,” according to a news release. The launch further expands the company’s neuro portfolio in Europe after the May launch of three new reperfusion catheters.

Unlike traditional access catheters, Penumbra makes its BMX81 and BMX96 using laser-cut, stainless steel hypotube technology. The company says this offers both stability and trackability. It developed the catheters to allow physicians to easily navigate the brain-complex anatomy.

Physicians can use the devices from either a femoral or radial access approach. The steel hypotube also enables a larger inner diameter while maintaining a lower outer diameter without compromising support. Penumbra says this expands intraprocedural options in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

“Physicians in Europe now have more options to serve their patients using our expanded portfolio. With five innovative devices introduced in Europe in a matter of months, our dedication to improving stroke care enables us to provide physicians with customized stroke solutions,” said Joan Kristensen, head of the Europe, Middle East and Africa region for Penumbra. “In all modesty, Penumbra provides physicians with the widest aspiration thrombectomy stroke portfolio on the market.”
