
London-based MintNeuro develops scalable, low-power semiconductor technology for neural implant applications. Houston-based Motif develops BCI technologies and microstimulators for treating depression. Together, they aim to bring MintNeuro’s specialized neural interface chip technology with Motif’s clinical-stage therapeutic implant platform. They expect this to result in new therapeutic BCI technology for mental health conditions.
The collaboration comes on the heels of FDA breakthrough device designation for Motif’s XCS wirelessly powered implant. Motif XCS, built on the company’s DOT microstimulator technology, delivers gentle electrical stimulation to a brain region clinically shown to reduce the symptoms of depression in adults who have not found relief from two or more medications.
Motif also previously singled out MintNeuro as a research partner when it received a grant to develop BCIs in 2025. The companies say their collaboration goes back more than a year, progressing from joint system architecture definition through to active hardware validation. MintNeuro already successfully integrated its sensing chip into Motif devices in pre-clinical work. Now, they plan to align successive chip generations with clinical development programs.
According to a news release, MintNeuro’s compact, ultra-low-power neural interface chips enable critical sensing and stimulation functions. Advanced sensing could enable the continuous monitoring of neural activity during therapy. This can provide rapid feedback on stimulation effectiveness and risk of relapse to inform closed-loop approaches.
The partnership also includes a multi-year comercial supply agreement. This secures access to MintNeuro’s chips for Motif’s pre-clinical, early clinical and pivotal study phases.
