The company unveiled its ColonPRO latest-generation software for the GI Genius intelligent endoscopy system. GI Genius, a computer-aided polyp detection system powered by AI, has been available in the U.S. since 2021. Medtronic designed it to redefine GI screening by assisting gastroenterologists performing colonoscopies.
According to a news release, the new software delivers a “significant leap forward” in AI-driven polyp detection. It introduces a new enhanced algorithm supported by a dataset that comes in at twice the size of the previous one. This particularly improves the system’s detection capabilities, resulting in a 9% reduction in false positives.
Medtronic also added a new feature that provides procedural highlights, helping to automate workflow. This reduces administrative burdens in documentation and helps with electronic health record (EHR) integration. The update also provides user interface enhancements to support the development of third-party applications through the AI Access platform.
Medtronic partners with ModMed to further enhance GI Genius
Along with the updates to GI Genius, Medtronic announced a partnership with Modernizing Medicine (ModMed), an EHR company. The company said the collaboration further emphasizes its commitment to a synergistic approach to the future of endoscopic care.
ModMed offers the gGastro EHR software as a complementary option to GI Genius, offering robust documentation solutions.
“Through our collaboration with ModMed, we can continue to help gastroenterologists achieve greater efficiency by streamlining workflows and leveraging augmented decision-making, freeing up valuable time for patient care,” said Raj Thomas, president of the Endoscopy business at Medtronic. “We are committed to working with industry leaders and focusing on where we can best offer innovation, addressing unmet clinical needs and elevating the standard of care.”
Medtronic and ModMed plan to begin testing new capabilities for future integration. They hope to enable gGastro EHR software to receive real-time, AI-generated data from the GI Genius system. This could make the documentation process more efficient, enabling physicians to spend more time on patient care.
“This is a true game changer for physicians — it represents precisely how physicians want AI technologies implemented and it will allow us to focus our energy on thinking about the patient and providing the best care possible,” said Dr. Jason Sugar, gastroenterology team lead at ModMed.
