Medtronic plays catchup after week-long IT outage

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) is playing catch-up after restoring its global computer system designed to track manufacturing and customer orders, which was brought down for a full week by an internal technical issue, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune report.

A spokesperson for the company told the paper that its computers were up and running again yesterday, a week after the problem took the system down.

No official numbers have been released related to the amount of customer orders that were disrupted by the outage, according to the report, but Medtronic spokesperson Fernando Vivanco said that the problem had affected customers of the Fridley, Minn.-based medtech giant globally.

“There was some variation of impact across Medtronic’s 4 major businesses based on their underlying systems. We continue to work extensively to quickly process and ship orders made during this interruption,” Vivanco told the Star Tribune via email.

The problem was attributed to an internal technical issue, with CEO Omar Ishrak writing in a letter to employees that there was no evidence of an “outside agent” involved, nor any breached data. The company said it is still investigating the root cause of the issue.

Ishrak reportedly told employees that the outage would require extra shifts to ensure that the company would be able to meet its customer and patient needs.

“This issue is caused by an internal technical matter to Medtronic, and we have no indication that an outside agent is involved and no indication of data exposure,” Ishrak wrote. “We are working with our IT vendors around the clock to restore these systems and resume normal operations.
