A Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) official shared on social media today that the company combined two operating units to create its Cardiovascular Surgery business.
Karim Bandali, who headed up the Cardiac Surgery unit, said the company has united his business with the Aortic unit. With this move, the company created Cardiovascular Surgery, led by Bandali. Simona Zannetti, who previously led the Aortic business, departed Medtronic earlier this year to become chief medical officer and SVP of clinical research at Artivion.
Bandali announced the move on LinkedIn:

Medtronic Cardiac Surgery includes technologies like surgical heart valves, ECMO, left atrial appendage (LAA) occlusion, mitral and tricuspid repair and more. Aortic, meanwhile, includes stent grafts, guidewires and more.
“By integrating our capabilities, we have a powerful opportunity to accelerate innovation, strengthen our partnerships with physicians and care teams, and deliver even greater impact across the full continuum of cardiovascular care,” Bandali said. “Our everyday focus will be to serve more patients tomorrow than we did today through a clear focus on our Medtronic Mission.”
This isn’t the first time Medtronic has combined operating units following its strategic realignment in 2020, which created 20 operating units. In 2023, the medtech giant consolidated its Surgical Robotics and Surgical Innovations operating units into a single Surgical operating unit. The following year, it merged Patient Monitoring and Respiratory Interventions into one business unit called Acute Care and Monitoring (ACM) as it exited the ventilator market.
