Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced today that it inked a multi-year renewal and significant expansion of its global strategic alliance with GE Healthcare (Nasdaq: GEHC) .

The alliance builds on more than three decades of healthcare technology collaboration. Medtronic and GE HealthCare expect the expansion to accelerate clinical and technology innovation. They hope to enable healthcare providers to deliver smart, safe and efficient care across hospital environments.

Medtronic said the longstanding alliance also aims to address future innovations. They hope to bring next-generation Medtronic technologies to GE HealthCare’s Patient Care Solutions platforms. That includes expansion into wireless wearable solutions and anesthesia airway visualization.

The companies say a key element of the collaboration comes in the form of the broad integration of clinically advanced patient monitoring parameters from Medtronic. Those include Nellcor pulse oximetry, Microstream capnography, INVOS regional oximetry and BIS brain monitoring.

All of these technologies can integrate across GE HealthCare’s monitoring solutions platforms, including maternal and infant care. Medtronic and GE HealthCare hope to deliver accurate and inclusive care across all patient populations.

The companies designed their collaboration to accelerate clinical transformation, reduce costs, and harmonize technology platforms. They hope to deliver integrated enterprise solutions that enhance patient outcomes and drive innovation across the continuum of care.

Medtronic has similar partnerships with companies like Philips and Mindray, too.

Commentary from Medtronic officials

Kate Benedict, president of the Medtronic Acute Care & Monitoring business, said:

“Our expanded alliance with GE HealthCare reflects our commitment to empowering healthcare professionals with world-class technology to personalize patient care, anytime, anywhere. Expanding access to our combined technologies and commercial solutions allows hospitals to streamline their operations, reduce inefficiencies, and ultimately empower clinicians to focus on what matters most: their patients.”

Jason Case, VP of R&D for Medtronic Acute Care & Monitoring, said:

“We are excited to continue to collaborate with GE HealthCare to bring our newest innovations in wireless wearable monitoring and seamless streaming video laryngoscopy from Medtronic to GE HealthCare’s anesthesia and monitoring platforms. Expanding our deep, long-standing strategic alliance with GE HealthCare helps ensure timely access to the latest innovative technologies for both clinicians and their patients.”
